| Summary: | The prioress of a monastery and the chapter of sisters have concluded that a sister in temporary vows, eligible to make final vows in June of 2002, is not suitable for their way of life. Canon 689, §1 states: "The competent Superior, after consulting his or her council, can for just reasons exclude a member from making further profession on the completion of temporary profession." I have been told by the prioress that it is customary for this monastery to inform sisters eligible for making final vows of the decision of the prioress and the chapter in March preceding the June offi nal profession. There is one other sister eligible who most likely will be accepted for final vows. In the case of the sister considered unfit to make final vows, it is the desire of the prioress that she leave the monastery as soon as possible after she has been officially informed of the decision that she will not be making final vows. That leaves approximately a three month period when she is still under temporary vows. According to the prioress, it is not likely that the sister in question will leave voluntarily while she is still in temporary vows. The prioress would like for her to leave in March for the sake of the peace of the monastery. The vocation of this sister has been in doubt all during the time of her temporary profession. She was narrowly accepted for temporary profession: a margin of one vote. The question the prioress has is this: must she go through the complex process of dismissing a sister outlined in canons 694 through 704 or can she write to the bishop who has jurisdiction over this monastery, requesting a dispensation from temporary vows? The prioress would prefer the latter course. |
