| Summary: | Assessing the ethical implications of a spirituality of ecology means first of all recognising the existence of a burgeoning social phenomenon together with the fact of a certain absence of Christian responses, which leaves room for varied and divergent expressions of spiritual experience with an ecological dimension. In the sixth chapter of Laudato si’, Pope Francis proposes a Christian spirituality of ecology that fills this gap. This article seeks: (1) to show that the very origins of the concept of spirituality include the experience of encountering the divine in nature; (2) to show that the question of spirituality is at the very origin of the concept of ecology as conceived by its founders, such as Ernst Haeckel et Henry David Thoreau, which is why spirituality and ecology are sometimes difficult to disentangle in various contemporary currents of ecological thought; (3) to offer a response, recalling the principal reference points offered by Pope Francis in Laudato si’ and other texts of the recent Magisterium concerning the social doctrine of the Church in order to develop a Christian spirituality that can nourish a commitment to integral ecology. Évaluer les enjeux éthiques d’une spiritualité de l’écologie, c’est tout d’abord reconnaître l’existence d’un phénomène social qui s’amplifie et reconnaître aussi l’existence d’un certain vide des propositions chrétiennes qui laisse sa place à des expressions diverses et divergentes d’expériences spirituelles à dimension écologique. C’est aussi ce vide que cherche à combler l’appel du pape François au chapitre 6 de Laudato si’, à façonner une spiritualité chrétienne de l’écologie. Dans cette contribution, il s’agit de : (1) montrer que les origines mêmes du concept de spiritualité inclut l’expérience de la rencontre du divin dans la nature ; (2) montrer que la question spirituelle est à l’origine même du concept d’écologie chez ses fondateurs, comme Ernst Haeckel et Henry David Thoreau, d’où cette intrication parfois difficilement démêlable entre spiritualité et écologie dans différents courants contemporains de pensée écologique ; (3) en réponse, rappeler les points de repère principaux fournis par le pape François dans Laudato si’ et les autres textes de la doctrine sociale de l’Église du magistère récent en vue du déploiement d’une spiritualité chrétienne qui puisse nourrir l’engagement à l’écologie intégrale. |
