Summary:The author identifies some of the most prominent merchants of English origin that lived in Madrid during the second and the third quarters of the seventeenth century that were Catholics. He pays special attention to the references provided by the notarial sources that prove that they were Catholics. He also informs about other features of their social profile and professional dedication. He informs about their role in the export wool trade, sales of imported merchandises, especially English cloths, and trade with wine from the Canary Islands, tobacco and fish, among other products. He also pays attention to their financial activities, namely credit to the Royal Treasury and loans to private persons.
El autor identifica a algunos de los principales mercaderes de origen inglés que residieron en Madrid en el segundo y tercer cuartos del siglo XVII y que profesaron la religión católica. Dedica especial atención a valorar las noticias que proporciona la documentación notarial que dan testimonio de su condición de católicos. Con carácter complementario presta también atención a otros aspectos de su perfil social y dedicación profesional. Cabe destacar la información que proporciona sobre su participación en el comercio de exportación de lanas, el de redistribución de mercancías de importación, en especial los tejidos ingleses, el de vinos de Canarias, tabaco y pescado, entre otros productos. También da cuenta de su participación en negocios financieros como los préstamos a la Real Hacienda (asientos) y a particulares.
