Description
Summary:This essay compares the contemplative visions and writings of Thomas Merton and Rainer Maria Rilke. It demonstrates that Rilke's notion of "inseeing" provided Merton with a framework for his own poetic technique through which the world is unmasked to reveal a larger spiritual dimension. The essay then considers how Hagia Sophia and selections from Rilke's Book of Hours present a God in solidarity with the alienated and rejected - and perhaps most provocatively - the feminine. In fact, we hear the most stirring calls to love of others and to a life guided by social justice through God's feminine voice.
