Description
Summary:This forum article reports on a recent project on contemplation. The contemplative traditions of the religious orders are a rich resource for spiritual, theological, and philosophical insight. They integrate aspects of prayer, liturgy, academic study, alongside charity and service to the poor, under the broader purpose of contemplation of the divine. This integrative tendency leads to holistic spiritualities which envisions contemplation as integral to the whole of life. Examining historical contemplative practices associated with these religious traditions also offers potential insights into theological and philosophical discourse. They complicate commonly perceived binaries such as contemplation and action, theory and praxis, as well as scholarly and devotional activity. Moreover, these contemplative traditions intimate a theological and metaphysical sense in which God remains in relation to all of creation.
