Le monde dans lequel il vit est loin d’avoir toutes les qualités dont le scientisme a voulu le décorer ; c’est déjà un monde angoissé et perverti par la technologie. Avec la notion de catastrophe, Verne exploite un nouveau paradigme, provoquant une sorte d’exaltation et d’effroi qui ressemble au sentiment du sublime kantien. Le temps des catastrophes, c’est cette temporalité en quelque sorte inversée. Verne describes the successive upheavals of the industrial society of the late nineteenth century. The world in which he lives is far from having all the qualities with which scientism wanted to adorn it, already being a world distressed and perverted by technology. With the notion of catastrophe, Verne draws on a new paradigm, provoking a kind of exaltation and fear that resemble the feeling of the Kantian sublime. The time of catastrophes is in a way the inversion of this temporality. |
