520 | |a Throughout his life, St. Maximilian Kolbe explored the mystery of Mary in the light of her Immaculate Conception. However, for Father Kolbe, the privilege of the Immaculate Conception is not independent because it is considered in the context of the entire mystery of Mary. All other Marian privileges presuppose a source or cause to which they owe their existence. Kolbe himself clarifies that this cause, to which Mary owes everything, is Christ. The basis of Mary's first and fundamental relationship with Jesus is her divine motherhood. Kolbe tries to place the person and mission of the Virgin Mary in the dynamic perspective of the history of salvation. Given the reality of Mary's divine motherhood, he tries to explain the way in which that comes about, namely, how it happens that Mary becomes, and is, the Mother of God. Mary comes into the world at a specific moment in history; she is the one whom God has always foreseen and chosen to be his collaborator in the work of salvation. She is called to be the Mother of the Incarnate Word. The Immaculata is full of grace by divine bestowal and is fully united with the Triune God. This defines her nature as one who has thus been prepared for her role as the Mother of God. The man-Jesus Christ does not have a human father. His conception does not fall within the universal law of transmission of human life. His conception is the fruit of the free decision of the Trinity itself, the Father and the Son, united by love, that is, by the Holy Spirit. It is also the fruit of Mary's positive response. The fact that Mary is the Mother of God is at the heart of all Marian theology and central to the veneration paid to the Blessed Virgin. According to Kolbe, divine motherhood is a free choice of God towards Mary. It is a totally gratuitous gift of the Trinity, a gift that, for Mary, becomes the reason for her greatness. It is the highest possible dignity that she, as a finite creature, can possess because the fulfillment of the maternal relationship of the Immaculata is the Word itself, the Second Person of the Trinity, to whom she gave birth in time.
