| Summary: | In his lecture marking the 60th anniversary of the PRO ORIENTE Foundation in Vienna on March 13, 2024, the Prefect of the Pontifical Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity honours the contribution of PRO ORIENTE to the dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches. Looking to the future, he mentions the question of relationship between church and state, the consideration of the liturgical traditions, and the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 as important aspects on the ecumenical path of reconciliation between the churches in East and West. "Unter den christlichen Kirchen und Gemeinschaften steht uns ohne Zweifel die Orthodoxie theologisch am nächsten. Katholiken und Orthodoxe haben die gleiche altkirchliche Struktur bewahrt; in diesem Sinn sind wir alle alte Kirche, die doch immer gegenwärtig und neu ist."1 Mit diesen Worten hat Papst Benedikt XVI. bei einer Begegnung mit Vertretern von Orthodoxen Kirchen in Freiburg i.Br. im Jahre 2011 seine ökumenische Überzeugung zum Ausdruck gebracht, dass die Gemeinschaft zwischen der Katholischen Kirche und den Kirchen des Ostens sehr eng ist. Dies ist vor allem darin begründet, dass in beiden Kirchengemeinschaften das ekklesiologische Grundgefüge erhalten geblieben ist, das sich seit dem zweiten Jahrhundert herausgebildet hat, nämlich die sakramental-eucharistische und die episkopale Grundstruktur in dem Sinne, dass die Einheit in der Eucharistie und das Bischofsamt in apostolischer Sukzession als für das Kirchesein konstitutiv betrachtet werden. Im Blick auf dieses Grundgefüge besteht zwischen der Katholischen Kirche und den Kirchen des Ostens eine große Übereinstimmung. Von dieser Überzeugung ist auch Kardinal Franz König geleitet gewesen, als er vor sechzig Jahren PRO ORIENTE gegründet und diese Stiftung in den Dienst der Versöhnung in der Kirche zwischen Ost und West gestellt hat. |
