Summary: | In Ukraine, Eastern Orthodoxy is divided between an independent church and a church under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. The Russo-Ukrainian war is fuelled by this religious conflict: the Ukrainian state encouraged this independence in order to leave Moscow’s spiritual influence, while Russia highlights the religious unity of Ruś to deny the existence of an independent Ukraine. These two churches are the result from the history of the region, the structures of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the recent developments in the relationship between the Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Russian Orthodox Church. |
