Summary: | Today's readings help us to reflect on the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ in terms of sacrifice, covenant, and meal. The gospel reading is about the Last Supper. Jesus offers his body and blood to his disciples under the form of bread and wine, instituting the Eucharist. His words over the cup explain that his blood is 'the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many' (Mark 14:24). The shedding of an animal's blood was part of certain sacrificial practices in the Judaism of that period, and so Jesus is indicating that his death is not to be a meaningless tragedy but an event of religious significance. He is dying 'for many' (i.e., a large number of people), and this is a saving death, associated in Christian tradition with the suffering done by God's servant in Isaiah for the justification and forgiveness of 'many' (Isa 53:11-12). Furthermore, the shedding of Jesus' blood for our sake functions as the sacrifice that initiates a covenant, a solemn agreement of mutual love and commitment between God and all who believe in Jesus. |
