Summary: | Food and foodways define us and our others. They serve to draw boundaries between and amongst groups and therefore are an effective lens through which to examine the boundary-marking behaviours that are central to most conceptions of minorities. In this chapter I explore what role food plays in the processes of religious minoritization and majoritization as laid out by Stausberg et al. in the introductory chapter in this volume. By examining the connection between religion and food(ways) more broadly, and then food and (religious) minoritization more specifically, I reveal how any discussion of minoritization must take seriously the symbol and practice of food, as foodways are often central to the creation, and perpetuation, of the very concept of who is a minority. After laying out the theoretical basis for the use of food as a vantage point on religious minoritization, drawing from examples from diverse traditions around the world, I consider how food 1) acts as a linchpin on which the discourse of secular/religious nationalism rests and is enacted and 2) is a means through which minority communities can push back at colonial, racist, and majority rhetoric that seeks to keep them minoritized. |
