| Summary: | Beyond its "expiatory" or rehabilitative function, can work be a privileged place where prisoners experience social friendship - which underpins the meaning of their life in society - and thus experience their dignity? The aim of this article is to demonstrate the prophetic nature of the necessary link between work and social friendship in prison for society as a whole. At the same time, it shows the damage caused when work is disconnected from the transformative force of social friendship, and thereby loses its status as work, unhappily giving way to that of exploitation. Within the microsociety of the prison, a potential setting for all evils and all forms of poverty, respecting and promoting the dignity of the incarcerated worker is a guarantee of respect for all workers, offering a fairly precise measure of the dignity of the social body at work (Mt 25, 40). Par-delà sa fonction « expiatoire » ou réhabilitatrice, le travail peut-il être un lieu privilégié où la personne détenue en prison expérimente l’amitié sociale - qui fonde le sens de sa vie en société - et donc éprouve sa dignité ? Cet article se propose de manifester le caractère prophétique du lien nécessaire entre travail et amitié sociale en prison pour l’ensemble de la société. Négativement, il s’agit de montrer les dégâts que cause un travail coupé de la force transformatrice de l’amitié sociale et qui perd de ce fait son statut de travail au profit malheureux de celui d’exploitation. Au sein de la microsociété carcérale, lieu potentiel de tous les maux et de toutes les pauvretés, le respect et la promotion de la dignité du travailleur incarcéré sont garants du respect de l’ensemble des travailleurs ; ils offrent une mesure assez précise de la dignité du corps social en travail (Mt 25, 40). |
