Item Description:Painting by William Tefft Schwarz, in the Benjamin Historical Museum and Art Gallery. The famous Negro Revolutionary Soldier and Christian minister is represented by the artist in the pulpit of the present Old First Church, around 1825. Haynes preached there often during the thirty-four years of his ministry in Vermont. He also preached in the original Meeting House. Born in 1753, he died in 1833
