Item Description:When the British troops occupied Richmond during the Revolution, the Virginia legislature fled to Charlottesville and then upon the approach to Tarleton to Staunton. From June 7 to 23, 1781, the legislative sessions were held in the original Trinity of which the present church is a part, which stood on the site of the beautiful vineclad edifice and was the first house of worship in Staunton. Among the Assemblymen who met here were Patrick Henry, Richard Henry Lee and other notables. On June 19th the Legislature here elected Gen. Thomas Nelson Governor of Virginia, to succeed the immortal Jefferson
