Descrição
Descrição do item:Monumental Methodist Church at Dinwiddie and Queen Sts., Portsmouth, Virginia, was founded 1772 by Robert Williams, the first Methodist preacher in Virginia, in the home of Isaac Luke, the first official in the State. In the Church may be seen replicas of previous buildings - "South Street Meeting House" (1775), "Glasgow Street Church" (1792), "Dinwiddie Street Church" (1831). The last was burned during the Civil War, rebuilt on the same site and the name changed to Monumental in 1873. In spite of war, plague and fire the history of the Church is unbroken from the beginning. It is today one of great churches of its city and its denomination
