Description
Item Description:Exterior of the Round Chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Martyrs at Auriesville, New York. The eight main entrances are capped by heroic statues of the North American Martyrs, canonized as a group in 1930. Three of these eight martyrs Rene Goupil (1642), Isaac Jogues (1646), John LaLande (1646) were slain for the Catholic Faith within the confines of the present Shrine, which three centuries ago was the easternmost castle of the Mohawks, called Ossernenon. This picture shows the statue of St. Rene Goupil Door, thru which the infirm seeking a cure are brought, by reason of St. Rene having practised surgery during his missionary life in America
