Description
Item Description:It is a modern building and stands upon the site of and over the former adobe parish church. It was built by Archbishop Juan B. Lamy whose life and works are immortalized in Willa Cather's book "Death Comes to the Archbishop". There are many fine paintings in this edifice. Behind the altar is a richly carved and painted reredos, erected by Governor Del Valle in 1691. Back of the altar are hung the old paintings, and beneath it are the remains of two Franciscan Friars who were murdered by Indians in the uprising of 1680. The remains of Archbishop Lamy also rest here
