Item Description:One can also visualize two arms forming from the peak of this monument as if to embrace the entire state of Michigan, the country, and the world. - St. Mary's Church, which this unusual Shrine is the out growth of, was established as a mission in 1920. Plans are now being completed to build a new and enlarged main church to replace the original mission church and your donations and special gifts for this purpose will be most helpful and gratefully received in Mary's name. - Christ the King. The Shrine-Grotto at Mio, Michigan is a mountainous structure of stone, honeycombed with grottos and niches. It is actually a composite shrine of shrines in single unit. - The very name, "Our Lady of the Woods" reflects the thousands of acres of God's beautiful; and majestic timberlands visible from the shrine's site. These were regions once home to the lumberjack, but now meccas to hunters, fishermen, and tourist. - Viewed from the front, the shrine is a sloping triangle of stone. It slowly rises from the ground on two sides to end in a peak, pointing out that all mankind's destiny is heavenwards, that the natural and the temporal should be sublimated into the spiritual and eternal
