| Item Description: | "The Mother Church of American Methodism" Lineal successor to the Meeting House in which the Methodist Church was born at the Christmas Conference on 1784, this edifice bears the same quaint and beautiful name. Modeled by the famous architect, Standford White, on the Campanile of Santa Maria in Ravenna, Italy, it is considered the finest example of ecclestiastical Etruscan architecture in America. In the tower alone, 6,000 tons of stone were used. The domed ceiling shows the heavens as they appeared on the night of Christ's birth. The first pastor of this church was Bishop Francis Asbury |
