Description
Item Description:Jackson Square, the scene of public meetings, in connection with the early history of Louisiana, dating from the period that Don Antonio Ulloa took possession of Louisiana in the name of the King of Spain. It was here that General Jackson, on his return from the Battle of New Orleans, was welcomed, as was also Lafayette in 1825. The Jackson monument in the center of the square, was erected in 1846. Henry Clay, the South's greatest Statesman dedicated the monument, the inscription on the base of which is "The Union must and shall be preserved."
