Item Description: | This 110 year old land mark is slated for dismantling by the S. E. Iowa Presbytery, despite the wishes of the community. An offer to buy was refused. The lighted cross was erected by myself, Vestor Stark, Batavia, Ia. R. R. #2 in the hope of delaying said destruction and to keep the building as a Memorial. The following chorus of the song "The Wayside Cross" was sung by the male quartet composed of Oren Fordyce, Wm. Heston, Marin and myself some 40 years ago. I only am left. "Near, near thee, my son, is the old wayside cross, Like a gray friar cowl'd in lichens and moss; And its cross-beam will point to the bright golden span, That bridges the water so safely for man; That bridges the water so safely for man." |
