Description
Item Description:The 2nd ed., the 1st having appeared without indication of publisher or date, probably in Lorraine; see Lieure. - First leaf blank, conjugate with title leaf that follows. Leaves [3-6] comprise the added etched title, an ode to the Virgin in French, and two prose encomiums in French and Latin, both signed with the initials F.R. - In Getty copy, leaves [4-6] are signed in reverse order ã3, ã2 and ã, leaf [3] being unsigned. - The emblematic ill. are numbered I-XXVI, corresponding to Lieure's 2nd state. They are etched, with some engraving, soft-ground etching, and perhaps drypoint. Lieure suggests that only the first 4 prints are by Callot, the remaining 23 being perhaps by Abraham Bosse. Above each emblematic ill. is a motto given in Latin and French, and below are two lines of Latin verse followed by four lines of French verse
