| Summary: | Within the geography of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, the predominant role of the Mezzogiorno emerges from the Bull Pie postulatio (1113) through which Pope Pasquale II took the Order under his protection, sanctioning its official birth. This contribution aims to investigate the origins of the three hospitaller priories present in Southern Italy and founded in Barletta, Capua and Messina, with a marked preference for seaside towns. We have tried to reconstruct the role and functions of the prior, essentially as an administrative link between the central seat and the peripheral structures, represented by the preceptories, also in furnishing a chronotaxis. Comparison with other realities in Western Europe has allowed us to establish how the birth and subsequent affirmation of priories in the Norman-Swabian Mezzogiorno was rather early, most likely due to the geographical position of this region, but also to the conspicuous support that the Order received from the kings of Sicily. Le rôle essentiel joué par le Mezzogiorno dans la géographie de l'ordre de St-Jean de Jérusalem ressort de la bulle Pie postulatio (1113) du pape Pascal II par laquelle il a pris cet ordre sous sa protection, marquant ainsi sa naissance officielle. Cet article étudie les origines de trois prieurés hospitaliers établis dans le Sud de l'Italie et fondés à Barletta, à Capoue et à Messine, avec une préférence marquée pour les villes cotières. Nous avons tenté de reconstituer le rôle et les fonctions du prieuré, qui constituait essentiellement un lien administratif entre le siège central et les structures périphériques représentées par les préceptories, en fournissant également une chronotaxie. La comparaison avec d'autres prieurés de l'Europe occidentale a permis de constater que la naissance et l'affirmation ultérieure des prieurés dans le Mezzogiorno normand-souabe ont été plutôt précoces, probablement en raison de la situation géographique de cette région, mais aussi du soutien ostensible que l'ordre a reçu de la part des rois de Sicile. Die wichtige Rolle des Mezzogiorno in der Geographie des Johanniterordens ergibt sich aus der Bulle Pie postulatio (1113), mit der Papst Paschalis II den Orden unter seinen Schutz nahm und damit dessen offizieller Entstehung seine Zustimmung gab. Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Ursprünge der drei in Süditalien anwesenden Priorate des Johanniterordens, die in Barletta, Capua und Messina, mit einer auffallenden Vorliebe für Meeresnähe, gebaut wurden. Wir haben versucht, die Rolle und Funktionen des Priorats zu rekonstruieren, das im wesentlichen eine verwaltungstechnische Verbindung zwischen dem zentralen Sitz und den von den Ordenshäusern vertretenen periphären Strukturen war, einschlieβlich einer chronologischen Übersicht. Der Vergleich mit anderen Orten in Westeuropa führte zu der Feststellung, dass die Gründung und anschlieβende Bestätigung der Priorate im normannisch- schwäbischen Mezzogiorno eher früh stattfand, wahrscheinlich wegen der geographischen Lage dieser Region, aber auch wegen der Unterstützung, die der Orden von Seiten der Könige von Sizilien erhielt. |
