Description
Summary:The precise nature of the Bronze and Iron Age occupations at Tell ed-Duwēr / Tel Lākīs̆ is still being investigated, as are potential historical events that have been debated since the earliest excavations at the site. YOSEF GARFINKEL has recently proposed several substantial changes to the understanding of the site. He suggests that the Level V (Iron Age HA) settlement was restricted to the north-eastern corner of the tell and surrounded by a fortification wall. He argues that radiocarbon data places this stratum in the second half of the 10th cent. B.C.E., and consequently reconstructs a phase of "Judean expansion" under King Rehoboam. He also reassigns the so-called "mid-slope wall", which is traditionally believed to be part of the Iron Age IIB fortification system, to the Middle Bronze Age, and rejects the existence of a defensive glacis. The author summarizes these suggestions and examines the evidence upon which they are based, gathers data from the three earlier and the fourth ongoing expeditions to the site, and disentangles GARFINKEL's lines of argument with the aim of achieving a more accurate reconstruction of Tell ed-Duwerl Tel La~fs in the Bronze and Iron Ages.
