| Summary: | Through an iconological study of the theme of the Madonna del silenzio in the early modern period in Italy, Spain, France and the former Netherlands, this work attempts to probe the operativity of art in negative theology. Based on an examination of some thirty works (paintings, engravings, drawings, sculptures), this article explores the compositional devices that transformed the silence of the sleeping Jesus into a display capable of inducing its beholders to meditate on the ineffable nature of the mystery of the Incarnation as well as on the specific suitability of the visual and mute arts in order to invent a convincing material transposition of this Christian mystery that is at the heart of negative theology. Moyennant une étude iconologique du thème de la Madone au silence à l’époque moderne en Italie, en Espagne, en France et dans les anciens Pays-Bas, cet article tâche de sonder l’opérativité de l’art en matière de théologie négative. Fondé sur l’examen d’une trentaine d’oeuvres (peintures, gravures, dessins, sculptures), ce travail explore les procédés compositionnels qui ont permis de transformer le silence de l’Enfant Jésus endormi en un spectacle susceptible d’induire les fidèles à des méditations sur la nature ineffable du mystère de l’Incarnation comme sur la convenance particulière des arts visuels et mutiques pour inventer une transposition matérielle convaincante de ce mystère chrétien qui est au coeur de la théologie négative. |
