Description
Summary:This paper aims to explore context and character of the longer LXX readings in Ezek 44:23–24, based on Codex Vaticanus (B), Papyrus 967 (p967) and Old Latin Codex Constantiensis (LaC). First, the position of these verses within the Book of Ezekiel and more particularly within chapters 40–48 is determined. Second, a broader comparison of the textual witnesses of the said verses is carried out, including the analysis of MT, the Greek witnesses B and p967, the Vetus Latina (VL), the Peshitta (Syr), and Targum Jonathan (TarJon). And finally, the meaning and literary function of the longer readings transmitted in LXX are clarified. The textual plusses displayed by LXX Ezek 44:24a originate in a Hebrew Vorlage, which establishes Zadokite priestly jurisdiction over cases of homicide and integrates the motif of ‘the righteous’ justifying the judgement of YHWH. The Vorlage thereby identifies ‘the righteous men’ announced in Ezek 23:45 as the Zadokite priests of the Second temple vision.
