Description
Summary:The anniversary of the publication of the apostolic letter of St. John Paul II on the Christian meaning of human suffering, the Salvifici doloris, offers an opportunity to reflect again on this universal experience of life. In this first article we will retrace the papal magisterium, from Pius XII to Pope Francis. Two trends emerged: on one hand, the invitation, primarily addressed to health personnel, but not only, to take care of suffering in the commitment to alleviate it, with the awereness that it is never a good in itself. On the other hand, the possibility of experiencing its mystery, on the part of the sufferer, in union with the crucified and risen Christ, on a path of acceptance and significance from a salvific perspective. This affirmation of the salvific value of suffering immediately raises the need for a distancing from a deviant perspective, such as that of glorified suffering, not present in the magisterium but is present in some forms of spirituality, especially in the first half of the 1900s. A subsequent contribution will verify the feasibility, in today's context, of this teaching in order to support the evangelization of the time of suffering for man today. (English)
