| Summary: | Book V of Augustine’s Confessions has frequently been the subject of in-depth analyses, addressing aspects such as Augustine’s connections with Faustus and Manichaeism, the role of astrology, and the skeptical episode he experienced in both Rome and Milan. Nevertheless, there has been a relative scarcity of studies treating this book as a cohesive unit. This article aims to provide an overview of the existing scholarship and engage in a methodological reflection to facilitate a holistic interpretation of Book V. By doing so, it seeks to underscore the strategic significance of this book within the broader context of the ‘autobiographical’ books of the Confessions. Le livre V des Confessions d’Augustin a souvent donné lieu à des études de détail traitant tantôt du rapport d’Augustin à Faustus et au manichéisme, tantôt du statut de l’astrologie, tantôt de l’épisode sceptique vécu par Augustin à Rome, puis à Milan; plus rares en revanche ont été les études qui envisagent ce livre comme une unité cohérente. Aussi le dessein de cet article est-il de proposer un état de la question et une réflexion méthodologique afin de permettre une lecture de ce livre comme une totalité et d’en montrer ainsi l’enjeu stratégique au sein des livres ‘autobiographiques’ des Confessions. |
