| Summary: | When José de Acosta arrived in Peru, sent by the General of the Society of Jesus as a theologian to illuminate the work of the Jesuits, the problem derived from the Indian doubt, which questioned the legitimacy of the presence of the Spaniards in America, seemed to have already been overcome. But another one emerged: how the Spaniards related to the Indians and the abuses to which this relationship gave rise. Acosta wanted to learn about this problem directly. And this knowledge is at the basis of his denunciation of the injustices that were committed, which he tried to convey to the General of the Company, to the King of Spain and to the viceroys of the colonized territories. He paid special attention to the taxes levied on the Indians. Neither his denunciations nor his proposals were received equally by everyone. Moreover, he was also concerned that the testimony of the Spaniards and the preaching of the missionaries were in coherence with his theological and moral reflections, which he collected in his best-known works. The difficulties he encountered at all levels were so profound that they ended up affecting his health. Cuando José de Acosta llega a Perú enviado por el General de la Compañía de Jesús como teólogo para iluminar el trabajo de los jesuitas, el problema derivado de la duda indiana, que cuestionaba la legitimidad de la presencia de los españoles en América, parecía ya superado. Pero surgía otro: el de cómo se relacionaban los españoles con los indios y el de los abusos a que daba lugar esta relación. Acosta quiso conocer esta problemática directamente. Y ese conocimiento está a la base de su denuncia de las injusticias que se cometían, que él procuró hacer llegar al General de la Compañía, al Rey de España y a los virreyes de los territorios colonizados. Especial atención prestó a los tributos con que se gravaba a los indios. Ni sus denuncias ni sus propuestas encontraron la misma acogida en todos. Es más, le preocupaba también que el testimonio de los españoles y la predicación de los misioneros estuvieran en coherencia con sus reflexiones teológicas y morales, que fue recogiendo en sus obras más conocidas. Las dificultades que encontró a todos los niveles fueron de tal calado que terminaron afectando incluso a su salud. |
