| Summary: | This article is just a preview of a great documentary work, in which comparative data is offered to show that the phenomenon of the implementation of penitential bro-therhoods was parallel in Spain and its American viceroyalties. Also analyzes the development of the processional rituals of Holy Week in Latin America during the 16th and 17th centuries. In the main American towns, the processions reached a splendor similar to those of the metropolis, as revealed by both the chroniclers of the Indies and the documentation consulted. En este artículo, que es tan solo un avance de un estudio de gran elaboración documental, se aportan datos comparativos para mostrar que el fenómeno de la implantación de cofradías penitenciales fue paralelo en la Península y en los territorios americanos. De igual modo, se analiza sucintamente el desarrollo de los rituales procesionales en la América española durante los siglos XVI y XVII hasta alcanzar un esplendor equiparable al de las principales poblaciones de la metrópoli, como resaltan los cronistas de Indias, y confirma la documentación conservada. |
