Summary: | The theological profession in South Africa, just as in many other western countries, currently asks itself questions about its identity and direction for the future. It seems as if it is no longer able to relate properly to society which it intends to serve. In this essay it is suggested that a solution must be sought in a renewal of the scientific paradigm used by theologians. Over the past twenty years theoreticians in the field of social sciences for the first time succeeded in solving the questions raised by the German ‘Methodenstreit’ of the previous century and consequently a new scientific paradigm came into being. The theoretical construction of Mary Douglas are used as an example of how theologians can renew their epistemological and methodological premises in order to meet the challenges of contemporary society. |
