Description
Summary:In this article I shall attempt to do two things: first I shall outline the concept of revelation put forward by a highly significant school of theologians (more specifically by the old testament scholars in their ranks), and secondly, I want to explain my own Ideas about the premise of old testament studies in a theological faculty. Although the two themes are interrelated, they originated independently. My conception of how the old testament should be studied - which hinges largely on the relation between faith and reason - may be found in somewhat symbolic form in the work I eventually published on the subject (Loader 1983:15-31). This conception. Although confirmed by what I found in the works of Dutch ethical theologians, was arrived at before I became acquainted with their theology. I shall now endeavour to show how their thinking) can be applied in the teaching of old testament studies. My thesis is that the ethical old testament scholars made a tremendous contribution to a method of presenting our subject in a meaningful, relevant way.
