Summary: | Professor Ian Eybers was a well-known Old Testament scholar and this memorial lecture describes his confessional approach. He was vehemently opposed to a descriptive approach and preferred to study the Old Testament from the viewpoint of faith. This influenced his views of the subdisciplines of Old Testament scholarship_ Due to the unity between the Old and New Testaments the Old must be interpreted in a Christ-centred way. Many problems arc attached to the canon of the Old Testament, but the solu-tion must be sought in Christ. Special canonics study the message of the Old Testament writings and how it was fulfilled in Christ. Israel's history must be interpreted from the viewpoint of salvation history. The ultir.1ate task of the exegete is to determine the kerygma and its fulfil-ment in Christ. |
