Description
Literature arising from or associated with the monastic movement offers thought-provoking material for theological anthropology. This paper points out some such concepts, primarily from the point of view of memory and the construction of self-identity. The Hymn of the Pearl is known for being the subject of disparate interpretations, being considered everything from an Iranian text to a Gnostic composition. We will present a narrative reading of the hymn using memory and forgetfulness as categories of analysis. We will thus propose a possible link between the Hymn of the Pearl and the Pseudo-Macarius. By 1967, Quispel had established a theological kinship (Verwandschaft der Teologie) between these two works and also pointed out the parallels in form. With his remarkable contribution in mind, we will probe the pseudo-Macarian literature for such kinship with the Hymn of the Pearl and the literature on the Apostle Thomas.
