Summary: | Within Reformed circles in the Netherlands the doctrine of the covenant is much debated. Different views about the number of covenants, the (un)conditional nature of the covenant, and who belong to the covenant of grace, have been fixed for decades. The disputants no longer attempt to influence, never mind convince each other. This article examines recent publications from opposite sides (Verbond en doop from the GGN and Woord houden from the GKN) and seeks to bring the different covenant views into conversation with each other, by critically discussing these views and testing them for their inner consistency. This essay seeks to give impetus to renewed reflection on Reformed covenant doctrine by articulating the differences and the elements of truth in both publications. |
