| Summary: | Alypios the Stylite was a very prominent figure in early and mid-Byzantine times far beyond the borders of his homeland Paphlagonia. The 7th-century Life of Alypios by an anonymous author is a fascinating text in style and structure as well as in contents and expression. This article discusses the text not only as a source for the biography of the saint, but also as a window into the religious history of a late antique town which has hitherto received little attention. In particular, this Life reveals how important a figure like Alypios was in an area that could not look back on a long church history, nor could it claim martyrs or other paragons of faith from the past. Alypios le Stylite fut un personnage de première importance aux époques proto- et médio-byzantine, bien au-delà des frontières de sa patrie, la Paphlagonie. La Vie d'Alypios, rédigée au viie s. par un auteur anonyme, est un texte fascinant par son style et sa composition, ainsi que par son contenu et ses aspects littéraires. L'article étudie le texte non seulement en tant que source de la biographie du saint, mais aussi comme une fenêtre ouverte sur l'histoire religieuse d'une ville de l'Antiquité tardive qui n’a que peu retenu l'attention jusqu'à présent. En particulier, cette Vie révèle toute l'importance de la personnalité d'Alypios dans une région qui ne pouvait pas se prévaloir d'une longue histoire chrétienne, ni se réclamer de martyrs ou d'autres modèles de foi antérieurs. |
