The spiritual writers come from a group the author calls "theologians of abnegation", writing between 1500 and 1900, and so identified because they take seriously the fact that Jesus made self-denial (abnegation) a condition for being his disciple. We can recognize four meanings in the descriptions of Israelites being fed with manna, and apply them to the Eucharist. First, the Eucharist-manna is a wilderness food (viaticum, food for a journey). Second, it is a providential food (an exercise of trust in God's providence). Third, a spiritual food (adapted to the formation of each individual soul). And fourth, an eschatological food (it calls us out of this world into God's kingdom). | ||

Premièrement, l'Eucharistie-manna est une nourriture du désert (viaticum, nourriture pour un voyage). Deuxièmement, c'est une nourriture providentielle (un exercice de confiance dans la providence de Dieu). Troisièmement, une nourriture spirituelle (adaptée à la formation de chaque âme). Et quatrièmement, une nourriture eschatologique (elle nous appelle à sortir de ce monde pour entrer dans le royaume de Dieu). | ||
