| Summary: | "... and the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of kids, but the Arameans filled the country" (I Kings 20 : 27). The word חשף — a derivative of the verb חשף: to uncover, to denude, has been interpreted, by all commentators, as a "little flock", and is unique in that sense in the whole Bible. Yet, it seems, that a reasonable translation of שני חשפי עזים is "an area as large as it could be denuded by two kids, during one day of grazing". The meaning of the whole sentence is "that the children of Israel deployed themselves on an area as large as it could be denuded by two kids during one day of grazing, against the Arameans who filled the country. |
