| Summary: | The discovery of two short inscriptions in alphabetic writing on the rocky faces of Wadi el-Ḥôl in the Theban Desert Road has been the object of a much disputed deciphering. However, a thorough examination allows a proposition for an admissible identification of the characters and reading of the text in the Canaanite language. The inscriptions, which apparently date back to the 19th century B.C., are of great significance for the origin of the alphabet, which cannot be in Egypt or Sinai, but which most likely originates from Canaan in the second half of the third millennium. La découverte de deux courtes inscriptions en écriture alphabétique sur des parois du Ouâdî el-Ḥôl, la Route du Désert de Thèbes, n’a pas été sans poser des problèmes de leur déchiffrement. Toutefois, un examen approfondi permet de proposer une lecture recevable de l’identification des signes et de la langue cananéenne ainsi que du contenu de leur message. Ces inscriptions qui paraissent bien dater du XIXe siècle avant J.-C., revêtent une grande importance pour l’origine de l’alphabet qui ne peut être en Égypte ou au Sinaï mais bien plus tôt en Canaan dans la deuxième moitié du IIIe millénaire. |
