| Summary: | Cet article analyse la trajectoire de la catégorie diagnostique « Problème religieux ou spirituel », incluse en 1994 dans la 4ème édition du Manuel diagnostique et statistique des troubles mentaux, le principal manuel de diagnostics de la psychiatrie nord-américaine. Trois moments de cette trajectoire sont soulignés ici: les débuts avec la psychologie transpersonnelle, le débat autour de son inclusion dans le DSM-IV, et la mobilisation de la catégorie dans la recherche psychiatrique sur la spiritualité au Brésil. En m’appuyant sur un ensemble de matériaux rassemblés par des recherches d’archives, bibliographiques et ethnographiques, je souligne que la trajectoire du « problème religieux ou spirituel » reflète le déplacement autour des débats savants sur la spiritualité dans les sciences sociales, des pratiques New Age à leurs formes institutionnalisées. Alors que la psychiatrie est connue pour avoir historiquement pathologisé l’expérience religieuse ou spirituelle, je soutiens que la mobilisation de la catégorie permet de légitimer la recherche psychiatrique contemporaine sur la spiritualité. This article analyzes the trajectory of the diagnostic category ‘Religious or Spiritual Problem’, included in 1994 in the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the main diagnostic manual of North American psychiatry. Three moments of this trajectory are highlighted here: the beginning with transpersonal psychology, the debate around its inclusion in the DSM-IV, and the mobilization of the category in psychiatric research about spirituality in Brazil. Drawing on an array of material gathered through archival, bibliographical, and ethnographic research, I point out that the trajectory of ‘Religious or Spiritual Problem’ mirrors the shifts in spirituality scholarly debates in social sciences, from New Age practices to their institutionalized forms. Although psychiatry is known to historically pathologize religious or spiritual experience, I argue that the mobilization of such category acts toward legitimizing contemporary psychiatric research about spirituality. |
