Sur la base d'éléments historiques, liturgiques et théologiques jusque-là inexplorés, l'article démontre l'existence de Godescalc, diacre à Liège dans la seconde moitié du VIIIe siècle, " auteur " de la composition de ce tout nouveau genre de livre liturgique durant la riche période de la réforme liturgique carolingienne. En considérant tous ces éléments nouveaux, l'article suggère que ce manuscrit est une sorte " d'échec prestigieux " dans le contexte de la production des manuscrits liturgiques du haut Moyen Âge. | ||

Grounded on hitherto unexamined historical, liturgical, theological, and iconographic evidence, this article gives credit to Godescalc, a deacon in Liège in the second half of the 8th century, with the conception and composition of an entirely new kind of manuscript during this fertile period of Carolingian liturgical reform. By considering the unique elements of its function as the first evangelistary for the Carolingian court, the article ultimately proposes that the Godescalc Evangelistary's very singularity rendered it a "noble failure" within the historical trajectory of medieval liturgical manuscript production. | ||
