Sumario:The apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia and the 2014 and 2015 Synods have addressed the situation of Catholics who enter into a civil marriage following divorce. Greater involvement of such faithful in the life of the Church has been proposed, which raises the issue of whether they may serve in church offices and ministries, such as participation in pastoral councils, teaching religion in Catholic schools or leading catechesis in parishes. The concept of canonical suitability is analyzed in light of the teachings of the Magisterium of the Church and other general provisions; the second part of the paper suggests different criteria in relation to clear positions and other, less clear-cut situations.
