| Summary: | The paper questions whether ? and if so, how ? do contemporary Christians might believe in what Holy Scriptures, Christian theology, and Christian devotion call ?hell?. How can one today understand the traditional Christian doctrine of ?everlasting damnation?? To this end, the paper outlines the religious roots of the idea of hell in Apocalyptic thought, its elaboration in Christian theology, and contemporary attempts to reformulate its meaning. It makes clear that the idea of everlasting damnation of the wicked is introduced by the idea of God?s retributive justice. This reasoning, however, cannot escape serious questions when it is confronted with Jesus? preaching of God?s abundant love: Can one conceive God as a merciless torturer? How are finite transgressions of human beings and eternal punishment interrelated? Already in the past, ?hell? was not exclusively conceived as a punishment carried out by God but as painful awareness of one?s own sins when confronted with God?s overwhelming love. Contemporary theologians of all denominations tend to claim that God?s love to all creatures would fail if there was only one single human being eternally excluded from God?s love. The paper discusses such objections to the traditional doctrine of hell and proposes a modified understanding that is inspired by the attempt to balance God?s justice and mercy. |
