| Summary: | On the basis of the Greek evidence, this article presents the development of certain aspects of the concept of the afterlife from the early Archaic period to the end of the Classical period. The aim of this contribution is to sketch the earliest, namely Homeric, imagination of the afterlife, which is still genuinely Greek at its core. From this basis, the later, new ideas about life after death will be identified, which were not only adopted by the Greeks, but also adapted to be compatible or combinable with the Homeric ideas. These new afterlife concepts originated, as will be shown, in the Mediterranean world to the east and south of Greece and spread to Greater Greece in the course of colonisation. |
