Summary: | Interreligious dialogue as a means of communication in an increasingly diverse society requires attention to the detail of preparation ahead of engagement. In particular, the full spectrum of religious doctrines from exclusivist to pluralist that can often be found amongst adherents of each participant religion must be considered. Attitudes towards the desirability and meaning of engagement with other religions, and how that should be translated into practice can vary, sometimes more within one religion than interreligiously. When planning dialogue, focus is often primarily upon achieving the representation of many religions, without adequate scrutiny of the positionality of proposed partners towards engagement. This can lead to insufficient preparation, poor communication, and a weak framework design prior to commencement, increasing the risk of less effective dialogue. This article explores various aspects of the positionality of potential partners for interreligious dialogue that should be examined before undertaking dialogue. |
