Description
Summary:Teresa of Avila takes up the biblical figures Martha and Mary of Bethany on a number of occasions across her writings, using them variously to represent different roles within the life of her communities, different types of prayer and, more strikingly, divisions within the human person during contemplative prayer at both the level of the faculties and within the soul itself. In employing the biblical sisters in these ways, Teresa situates her thought within a long and complex exegetical tradition which has, since the earliest Christian centuries, offered diverse and sometimes conflicting allegorical readings of the Lukan pericope. The aim of this study will be to look at Teresa's particular use of the biblical sisters in relation to this history, examining how she is influenced by previous interpretations and yet able both to stand aside from them and to contribute a new and innovative reading to the tradition.
