Description
Summary:This article analyses the intersecting lives of two Jesuits who had a marked influence on the mysticism and spirituality of the Viceroyalty of Peru in the 16th and 17th centuries: Father Diego Martinez and coadjutor brother Bernardo Bitti. The former, born in Extremadura, was a missionary who acted as the spearhead of the Jesuit missions in the peripheries of southern Peru, while the latter, an Italian, was a painter in charge of representing in images the Holy Family and the Catholic saints, establishing a stylistic canon among the Spaniards, Creoles, mestizos and natives of Peru. This paper shows how these parallel lives exemplify the competing goals of the Society of Jesus in the early modern Viceroyalty of Peru, and the tensions over time between the life of evangelization and contemplation. Unlike other scholarly works that focus on the figures of both characters individually, this essay studies the influence they exerted on the mysticism and spirituality of the viceregal society based on contemporary and historiographic sources that narrate the main events led by the Jesuits of Peru.
