Summary: | In a number of passages, the Gospel of John contains narrative elements that connect with the ancient notion of the 'sublime.' This concept is most fully expounded in Longinus' essay "On the Sublime," possibly written in the first century CE. The sublime also connects to modem 'affect theory' in literary studies which is concerned with how emotion operates within biblical texts. There are three elements to the sublime which are particularly apparent: in the Prologue to John's Gospel (John 1:1-18), the Raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-12:11) and Jesus' Great Prayer (John 17:1-26): elevated or cosmic themes, the depiction of intense feeling, and its transformative effect with a paradoxical sense of humility and high-mindedness. In each case, the sublime works to bring about an affective sense of awe, beauty and ecstasy in the audience and to lead them to renewal of life. These three Johannine narratives particularly display the sublime in their literary construction and the effect they have on the reader or hearer. |
