| Summary: | Il battesimo di Agostino ricevuto nel battistero milanese di San Giovanni alle Fonti costituisce un punto di svolta nella vita del futuro vescovo di Ippona. Senza pretesa di esaustività, alcune coordinate crono-topiche e antropologiche si rivelano utili per intuire la complessità del contesto culturale e religioso, sociale ed ecclesiale, in cui è maturata la conversione del retore giunto dall’Africa. Prioritario emerge il confronto con la tradizione filosofica platonica tanto nel suo opporsi all’annuncio cristiano, quanto nel suo trovarsi propedeutica ad esso. Agostino è un credente che non rinuncia al proprio impegno culturale, disponendosi a trasfigurarlo al servizio di quella Chiesa nella quale si è lasciato chiamare a salvezza. Mentre si attinge agli scritti di Agostino, di Ambrogio e di altri protagonisti di quella stagione, non si ignorano i dati offerti dalla ricerca archeologica. The baptism of St Augustine, received in the Milanese baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti represents a turning point in the life of the future Bishop of Hippo. Without presuming to be exhaustive, the paper employs some chrono-topical and anthropological points of reference, useful in understanding the complexity of the social, cultural, religious and ecclesiastical context in which the conversion of the orator from Africa matured. Of prime importance is the comparison with the platonic philosophical tradition, both in its opposition to, as in its preparation for, the annunciation of the christian message. Augustine is a believer who does not abdicate his own cultural commitment, instead he dedicates himself to its transfiguration at the service of that Church in which he gave himself to the call of salvation. While, for our research, we will depend on Augustine’s writings as well as those of Ambrose and of other important figures of that period, we will not ignore the data provided by archaeological research. |
