Description
Summary:Cassirer and von Uexküll, in very different ways, tried to develop Kant’s fundamental achievements; moreover, VU’s research in biology considerably influenced the development of Cassirer’s thought, and both authors play a significant role in the philosophy of the symbol. This paper aims to compare the two authors by showing that Cassirer’s notion of symbol and symbolic pregnancy, formulated in the Philosophy of Symbolic Forms, can be applied to von Uexküll’s dynamics of stimuli in living beings. In this way, it becomes possible to highlight a non-subjectivist reception of Kantianism by von Uexküll, in which the subject is not the origin but rather the result of the transcendental constitution. Finally, the comparison can help extend the phenomenon of symbolic pregnancy beyond the human subject.
